BONNEVILLE CHAMPIONSHIP RACING
TEAM WHITE LIGHTNING RACING BEGAN
THEIR PURSUIT OF WORLD LAND SPEED RECORDS IN 2003. INSPIRED BY JOHN MAFFUCCI AND GRAEME “RABBIT” BARTILS’
PASSION TO GO TO BONNEVILLE THE TEAM WAS CREATED AND OFF THEY WENT.
THEY FOUND THE EAST COAST TIMING ASSOCIATION
(ecta-lsr.com) OFFERED PRELIMINARY EVENTS TO BONNEVILLE. A STANDING ONE-MILE COURSE, IN MAXTON, NC, GAVE THEM A PLACE NOT
ONLY TO SET THE CARS UP FOR BONNEVILLE, BUT TO SET LAND SPEED RECORDS FOR THE STANDING MILE.
RABBIT SET FIVE RECORDS,
AND JOHN SET FOUR RECORDS FOR THE MAXTON MILE IN 2003
THEN THE TWO WENT WEST. THEY SOON LEARNED HOW THE SCTA (SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TIMING
ASSOCIATION) GUYS WORK TOGETHER TO ACCOMMADATE THE RACERS. ALTHOUGH THE TECH AND STAGING LINES WERE LONG, THEY MADE IT THROUGH
THE WEEKEND WITH FEW PROBLEMS.
We did it. We set a new World Land
Speed Record for C/PS
As all of you know, our goal was to drive our street legal 2003 Mustang Cobra from Dawsonville,
GA. to Bonneville and set a new record at better than 200 mph. Well, we did drive it to Bonneville, but when we got there,
the safety inspectors didn’t like us trying to go over 200 mph on the original cast alloy wheels. NGF had done an excellent
job of preparing the car, but because of the wheels, we were limited by the safety inspectors to 180 mph.
So, we made our first run Saturday
afternoon on the 3-mile course. 100+ degree temperatures and 20 mph cross winds made it very interesting, but we managed to
pull of a 174.036, which qualified us for a record run the next morning.
Sunday morning, at 7:20 am we made our
record run on the 3-mile course. I had to hold it at 4800 rpms in 6th gear from the 2-mile mark on, so I wouldn’t exceed
180 mph. This gave us a run at 178.996, and a record of 176.516, the average of the two runs.
I can’t thank
enough all the people that made this boyhood dream come true. All motor heads dream of going to Bonneville to set a Land Speed Record, and with help of all of
you I was able to do it.

OUR MISSION FOR BONNEVILLE 2004 WAS:
1. EXTEND MY CURRENT C/PS (PRODUCTION SUPERCHARGED) RECORD TO
OVER 200 MPH,
2. BREAK THE EXISTING D/MR (MODIFIED ROADSTER) RECORD OF 213. MPH
3. SET A NEW RECORD FOR AA/MT.
AND, WE DID ALL THREE.
BOB MERICKLE SET THE AA/MT RECORD IN HIS BOX STOCK LIGHTNING TRUCK AT
I SET THE C/PS RECORD AT 203.231 IN MY 2003 MUSTANG COBRA.
GRAEME (RABBIT) BARTILS SET THE NEW D/MR RECORD
AT 219.924 IN HIS 4.6 FORD MODULAR POWERED ’32 FORD ROADSTER.
WE CANNOT SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THE FORD MODULAR
MOTORS THAT POWERED OUR 2004 BONNEVILLE PROGRAM.
BOB’S LIGHTNING TRUCK WAS BASICALLY BOX STOCK WITH HEADERS AND
AN AIR INTAKE, WITH 28,000 MILESON
RABBIT’S ROADSTERS MOTOR WAS OUT OF A WRECK WITH 23,500 MILES. WE DID CHANGE THE SPARK PLUGS, ADDED A METCO
PULLEY SETUP, A WHIPPLE SUPERCHARGER, AND CUSTOM SHORTY EXHAUSTS. RABBIT’S RECORD RUN WAS IN EXCESS OF 220 MPH WITH
THIS JUNK YARD MOTOR.
MY MOTOR WAS A 614 RWHP/612 LBS. OF TORQUE MONSTER, BUILT BY MV PERFORMANCE. IT WAS BORED AND STROKED
TO EXCEED THE 5.01 LITERS REQUIRED FOR THE C/PS CLASS, A WHIPPLE SUPERCHARGER INSTALLED, A METCO PULLEY SETUP, AND BASSANI
AND BORLA FOR THE STREET LEGAL EXHAUST SYSTEM.
